What Are The Signs That You Need A Tooth Extraction?

October 26, 2020

Understandably, you want to keep your teeth forever, but circumstances can force your dentist to recommend a tooth extraction. If there is excessive tooth decay or damage, you will have to get your tooth extracted. There are a few signs that you need to be aware of to determine if you need the procedure.

Sunridge Dental Clinic is a locally owned dental clinic that provides a range of dental care services, including family dentistry, emergency dentistry and children’s dentistry. Our highly trained and experienced dentists ensure that the treatment plan that we offer is tailored to your needs.

Signs You Need Tooth Extraction

There are a couple of reasons which force dentists to advise pulling the tooth. Your medical and dental history will be asked along with your allergies and the kind of medication you take. The main procedure will be taking an X-ray of your mouth to find the exact problem.

The three major signs are:

  • Overcrowding or impaction – Impacted teeth shift or grow in the wrong position. Overcrowding is the condition in which the teeth do not fit comfortably in your mouth. Overcrowded teeth can lead to pain, infection and misalignment. Your dentist will remove the tooth that is causing trouble for the remaining teeth to have more space.
  • Damage – A tooth that has started to decay can be treated to an extent, but sometimes the damage is so extensive that the teeth become untreatable. Your dentist will have to extract them.
  • Infection – If a decaying tooth is not treated in time, the decay will spread to the tooth pulp. If the pulp is infected, then the dentist will recommend root canal therapy if it’s the early stage. But if the damage is extensive and the tooth is not restorable then extraction will be treatment of choice.

What To Expect During A Tooth Extraction

The process is fairly quick and easy. First, an anesthetic is given to numb your mouth so that you don’t experience any pain during the procedure. Once the tooth is pulled out, gauze will be placed in the empty socket for it to stop bleeding. Stitches may be used to close the gum.
